Senior Engineering Specialist - Arc Science

Corporate Research & Technology focuses on the front end of innovation by: conducting research to advance the state of the art, emphasizing cross-business impact technologies, and innovating to provide Eaton's customers' with safe, efficient, and reliable power management solutions.
The Arc Interruption & Safety team has the principal goal of identifying, developing, and justifying commercialization of significant growth opportunities for diverse Eaton businesses in the area of circuit protection (circuit breakers and fuses), electrical power control (contactors and motor starters), and electrical fault detection and mitigation (arc fault and arc flash mitigation).
The Senior Engineering Specialist is expected to lead technology strategy and execution for broad applications. This includes acquiring resources, funding and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. They will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost and technical targets for all research and development efforts under his/her control.
The senior engineering specialist creates innovative product ideas based on breakthrough technologies in the area of arc physics and switching devices. The primary function is to be an expert in electrical arc physics and arc simulation, to support the development of technology and products required to manage arc switching, current limiting phenomena and arc fault/arc flash mitigation in various applications for AC and DC electrical power systems.
Leads complex global technology realization programs/projects involving both internal business unit partners as well as partners external to Eaton utilizing our internal project execution processes, including Gate Reviews, Design Reviews, and Technical Reviews. (external stakeholders include universities, National Labs, government entities, manufacturing partners, etc.)Provide Technology Leadership in arc interruption and arc simulation; develop global strategies for technology roadmaps that are linked to and supportive of the overall Global Technology & Research StrategyLeads the development of global strategies for technology roadmaps for broad applications that are linked to, and supportive of, the overall CRT and business strategies. Leads or co-leads ideation events (Innovation Summits, Design Bursts, etc.)Serves as Principal Investigator in government proposal preparation and/or project execution of large projectsLeads open innovation events with universities and external institutes that align with Power Block strategySets IP strategy with business unit stakeholders and actively contributes to IP generation
MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics.Extensive experience in arc physics, arc simulation & its related applicationsWorking experience in arc interruption and arc simulation related to various circuit protection and switching devices such as circuit breakers, contactors, and motor starters.Advanced degree may be substituted with additional working experience in the arc interruption, arc simulation, arc switching, arc fault detection and arc flash mitigation field.
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics.PhD may be substituted for 5 years work experienceTechnical Expertise in Plasma physics and numerical modeling, especially for arc discharges. Consolidated knowledge in numerical methods for fluid dynamics and electromagneticsElectrical power control and switching devices such as circuit breakers including arc interruption, switching mechanism and trip technologyProficient use of 'state of the art' simulation tools, e.g. Ansys, Fluent and Advanced programming skills, e.g. in C, Fortran, PerlArc behavior in switching devices, Interruption of AC and DC circuits and interaction between arc plasma and different insulation materials and gasesElectrical power test setup design using high power AC/DC systems for new technology and product evaluation
